Rubbish Disposal . . .
Our relatively remote location means that effective rubbish disposal is an issue. As well as the ecological consequences, if this is not managed effectively, then the increasing costs of rubbish disposal will ultimately need to be passed on to campers in their fees. Campers need to minimise their rubbish and take as much home with them as they can. Lakefront campers are responsible for their own rubbish. Campers also need to ensure that their children are disposing of rubbish correctly. Such items as damaged deck chairs and old boat batteries will need to be either taken home again, or dumped by campers at the Twizel Dumping Station. It is recommended that campers bring suitable containers for sorting their rubbish for disposal into the correct bins, or for taking it home with them when they leave.
Changes to Rubbish Collections for the 2021/22 Season:
The 2020/21 season was a particularly difficult one for us regarding rubbish, with many people disregarding our signage regarding acceptable dumping of rubbish. The bins provided are not for such items as broken camping gear - these should be taken home with you. Items which were left in the rubbish and recycling area included two chemical toilets (one full), vacuum cleaner, gas bottles, air beds, large tent, chairs & kitchen items. We considered removing the rubbish and recycling bins and making it the problem of the campers to take it away with them, and we may have to do that in future. However the worst time is the end of the season, so we have decided to remove the bins for that time, instead of for the whole season. This means that there will be normal collections throughout the season, but when season campsites are removed at the end of the season, campers will need to take their rubbish and recyclables home with them. To clarify, all bins will be removed from the beginning of April. For the month of April it will be a carry in –carry out policy.
